The Cursed DayZ: Food, Thirst and Illness

A short, practical guide to staying fed, watered, and healthy in DayZ.

Survival essentials

Use pumps for safe water. If you fill from lakes or rivers, boil it or purify it with chlorine tablets. Carry a bottle or canteen and sip often rather than chugging.

Eat what you find, but cook meat well done. Avoid raw or rotten food. Open tins with a knife to save tools and space. Graze little and often to avoid vomiting.

Keep rags clean. Disinfect with alcohol tincture or disinfectant and carry at least four to six. Patch bleeds first, then move to cover.

Know your meds. Charcoal tablets help with bad food. Tetracycline treats bacterial illnesses such as cholera. Multivitamins support recovery. Rest and fluids speed healing after any setback.

Stay warm and dry. Wet plus wind makes you ill. Get indoors, wring clothes, swap to dry layers, and use a small hidden fire if needed.

Fieldcraft upgrades

Preload at pumps before a raid. Drink to hydrate and fill every container. Rotate small sips on long runs to keep stamina high.

Follow a simple sick plan. If you vomit, stop eating, take charcoal if food-related, take tetracycline if you suspect dirty water, sip water in small amounts, stay warm, and rest until the icons clear.

Cook quietly. Use tiny fires indoors or deep in trees. Dry soaked clothes while you cook to fix the temperature and illness risk together.

Carry a compact survival kit. One water purifier stack, one charcoal stack, one tetracycline stack, a clean bandage stack, and matches or a hand drill. This fits in a small pouch and solves most crises.

Manage calories with intent. Meat and a little animal fat keep you going for hours, but always pair fat with water. Save heavy cooking pots for bases and travel light with a canteen and a pan.

Keep it simple. Drink safe, cook thoroughly, treat early, and you will spend more time hunting and less time hugging a toilet.
